Tips and Tools for Contacting and Communicating with Elected Officials

Below are some practical suggestions for communicating with your elected officials about supporting and preserving on- and off-leash dog walking access throughout the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA).

Making a phone call or writing a personal letter is the most effective way to communicate with your elected officials. However, if time is an issue, sending an email or a fax is perfectly suitable.

Making a Phone Call:

• Ask to speak directly with the staff person who handles the GGNRA Dog Management Plan.

• Identify yourself and your issue succinctly.

• Briefly state the reason for your call, and why this issue is important to you.

• Be courteous, keep the call short, and don’t forget to thank the staff person for his/her time.

Tips for composing a personal message:

• State the reason for writing your message in the first sentence or two.

• Explain why this issue is important to you.

• Be courteous, and most importantly, keep your letter or email message brief.
